Swell Season announce new album and live Irish dates! - June 02, 2009 @ 07:36:54
Author: Claire

it's here at last... no, im not talking about the glorious sunshine that we've had this past few days in ireland (although, that is rather pleasant!), but the day when i announce the first touring dates to support the forthcoming album... we all want to start here in ireland before going anywhere else... so, we're going to. these dates will pretty much be on sale as of today or tomorrow from their box offices direct. im sure you can all google and find them - but - to give you the heads up here they are:

AUGUST
18th millenium forum derry
21st wexford opera house
23rd cork everyman palace theatre
24th glor theatre, ennis, clare
26th national concert hall, dublin

supports to be announced. the new swell season album featuring the frames will see a release date late september worldwide - but - if we dont tour ireland first and upfront, we're possibly not going to get home to do so for quite some time - so it seems like a good idea to go for it sooner rather than later. these will be seated, theatre shows with the full band of glen, mar, rob, graham, colm and joe. expect new songs and of course some oldies and middle aged ones too :0) cx

additional press information:

The Swell Season (featuring The Frames) have announced initial details of a new album along with the Irish leg of a worldwide tour starting in August. Tickets go on sale on Tuesday 2 June priced at 30 euro (plus booking fees).

The album, whose title is still to be confirmed, will feature 11 brand new tracks and is planned for release on 25 September. Meanwhile Academy Award winners Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova will bring their unique live show back to Ireland to kick off a world tour in celebration of the second album to be made under the monicker The Swell Season.

Following the Irish shows The Swell Season tour will roll into the US in September / October and Europe in November / December. There are already plans to tour Asia in Spring 2010.

The Swell Season continue to ride a phenomenal wave of success that began with the Irish independent film “Once” receiving the Audience Award at the 2007 Sundance Film Festival and being picked up by Fox Searchlight distribution. Although it was shot in just 17 days on a shoestring budget of $160,000, “Once” has gone on to gross in excess of $20 million worldwide and garner an Academy Award (Oscar) for Best original Song (for “Falling Slowly”). Glen and Marketa have been touring almost non-stop since the movie was released and have appeared in almost all of the high profile TV shows along the way (including Letterman and The Tonight Show with Jay Leno as well as the Jools Holland show in the UK and Tubridy Tonight and Other Voices here in Ireland).

Glen Hansard / Marketa Irglova win Oscar for Best Song! - February 25, 2008 @ 08:25:33
Author: c/o Friction

Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova have won the Oscar for Best Song at this year’s Oscars for their composition “Falling Slowly” which featured in the hit independent Irish film Once.

After a rollercoaster few weeks, with the Academy involved in a lengthy deliberation over the eligibility of the song, vindication comes in the form of an 8 1/2 pound 13 1/2 inch gold-plated statuette that is the most sought after prize in the movie world.

Glen and Marketa’s acceptance speeches were as follows:

Glen Hansard:
Thanks! Go raibh mile maith agaibh. This is amazing. What are we doing here? This is mad. We made this film two years ago. We shot on two Handycams. It took us three weeks to make. We made it for a hundred grand. We never thought we would come into a room like this and be in front of you people. It's been an amazing thing. Thanks for taking this film seriously, all of you. It means a lot to us. Thanks to the Academy, thanks to all the people who've helped us, they know who they are, we don't need to say them. This is amazing. Make art. Make art. Thanks.

Marketa Irglova:
Hi everyone. I just want to thank you so much. This is such a big deal, not only for us, but for all other independent musicians and artists that spend most of their time struggling, and this, the fact that we're standing here tonight, the fact that we're able to hold this, it's just to prove no matter how far out your dreams are, it's possible. And, you know, fair play to those who dare to dream and don't give up. And this song was written from a perspective of hope, and hope at the end of the day connects us all, no matter how different we are. And so thank you so much those who helped us along way. Thank you.

The Frames opening act for Bob Dylan tour of Australia & New Zealand - May 23, 2007 @ 00:01:00
Author: Claire

We are delighted to announce that we will be opening act for the Bob Dylan tour of Australia and New Zealand this august. The tour takes in 3 cities in New Zealand and 5 cities in Oz (see below). Here's some blurb from the official press release:

Returning at the pinnacle of his most creative and diverse projects - documentaries, books and number one albums, Bob Dylan and his band are coming to Australia and New Zealand for the first time in more than four years for a comprehensive national run of dates in August 2007.

And opening the evening for the entire tour of Australia and New Zealand, by personal invitation, will be one of Ireland.s most successful bands, The Frames.

The Frames released their first album in 1992 and, for over nearly a decade bounced through various record deals and band line-ups. Their live album Set List and 2005's Burn The Maps both went straight to No 1 in Ireland, the latter finishing at No 5 on the New York Times end of year Top 10 releases.

The band's most recent album The Cost (2007) has received widespread praise with trademark delicate folk melodies, which weave through blasts of big guitars and artful noise to great cinematic effect.

A perfect way to describe the music of a band who are also celebrating Sundance Film Festival success with the film Once, which stars The Frames. frontman Glen Hansard and was directed by one-time Frames bass-player John Carney. Once won the World Cinema Audience Award: Dramatic prize at this year's Sundance.

With The Frames in concert, Bob's audiences on this tour should brace themselves for a thoroughly rewarding and exhilarating experience.

Author: c/o Friction

On the eve of departing for a European tour, The Frames camp is currently celebrating the Sundance success of the film "Once" (starring frontman Glen Hansard and sometime Swell Season conspirator Marketa Irglova, and directed by one-time Frames bass-player John Carney). The film won the: "World Cinema Audience Award: Dramatic" Prize at this year's Festival. The Chicago Tribune film critic described it as "the best musical of a generation" while comparing it with the classic Talking Heads film "Stop Making Sense"!

"Once" is slotted in for a showing as part of this year's Dublin Film Festival and will be released in cinemas in March.

Meanwhile Glen has also been shortlisted for an award in the 4th Annual Film & Television Awards in Ireland in the Best Music category for the film.

Glen Hansard included on free CD in the new issue Of Hot Press! - October 24, 2005 @ 0:04:51 AM
Author: Claire

From the Hot Press ppl...

The latest issue of Hot Press (published Thursday, 20th October) comes with an exclusive FREE CD available only to Hot Press readers. Live & Rare Vol. 1 is a superb collection of songs from some of the country's finest bands and solo artists, all recorded live at special radio sessions.

The collection showcases the cream of contemporary Irish rock, and was compiled by Jon Richards from the InStudio Sessions at Galway Bay FM. Artists featured on the CD include: Damien Rice, The Frames, The Devlins, Ron Sexsmith, Mundy and Roderigo y Gabriela.

"These are genuinely remarkable recordings," says Niall Stokes, editor of Hot Press. "Listening to 'I Remember' by Damien Rice, the stunning version of 'Lay Me Down' by The Frames or The Devlins performing 'There Is A Light' really beautifully, you get a fresh sense of just how powerful these artists are as songwriters and performers. And those are just three examples. We're very proud to have been able to bring what are 13 gems to a huge audience via Hot Press."

Thank you to all you have reached out to help those in need as a result of this disaster. While the news reports may be dwindling the need will continue for months to come. We will have a donation box on the merch table on the upcoming U.S. tour. We will divide these donations amongst family and friends who have lost their homes and/or businesses. Please stop by the merch table to say hello and check out our shirts. I'll be happy to give you any additional information on those we plan to help and suggested organizations. We know not everyone is able to give monetarily, we only ask that you keep these people in your thoughts and prayers. For those that feel the need is greater in their own communities, please continue to donate and/or volunteer where you are. Major disasters don't erase daily needs.
Thanks, Cherie

Féile na Bealtaine limited edition CD - April 28, 2005 @ 5:51:08 PM
Author: Claire

Two years ago, during his gig in McCarthys Bar Dingle, Glen was joined on stage by piper and whistle player Eoin Duignan and the result was "Kachina" - a song celebrating the spirit of the invisible forces. On that special night Glen spontaneously came up with the words for the melody and with their strong message of hope he dedicated the performance to Eoin.s daughter Triona to encourage her out into the world.

With music written by Jon Sanders and Eoin Duignan and lyrics by Glen Hansard, "Kachina" has been recorded with backing vocals by Eilis Kennedy and has been released along with "The Dance of the Gipsy Queen" from Eoin.s highly acclaimed CD "Coumineol" and "Bealtaine" written by Jon Sanders from his forthcoming cd "Latitudes", on a limited edition cd especially for Féile na Bealtaine, the Dingle arts festival now in is 11th year.

The CD will be officially launched at 12 noon on Thursday 5th in Cúilín Studios, Dingle by Mícheal Fanning, Eoin Duignan and Jon Sanders as part of the Féile na Bealtaine Festival and as only 1,000 cds are being pressed demand is expected to be high. All proceeds will go to the Dingle Hospice. Priced .10.00 it will be available from the Féile na Bealtaine office in Dingle (066 9151082), The Dingle Record Shop, Green Street (087 2984550), The Music House, Orchard Lane (066 9152633) and also online at http://www.duigo.com/.
