newsletter - march 2006

hi all. i feel the urge to put fingers to keyboard and fill you in on a few things that are occurring over the next wee while. frames men plus a few extra musicians are still in france, beavering away on the next album. everyone is happy with progress thus far and i get to go and have a listen, pre mix, on paddys day when they finish tracking (any excuse for a trip to la belle france for some good music, fine wines and a lovely bit of grub!). pending final delivery - we are currently still shooting for a late sept release in europe at least...firmer release dates will be forthcoming when i have the finished thing in my hands and can schedule appropriately.

so heres the other news. glen has recorded a collaborative record with czech singer/pianist marketa irglova. it is titled 'the swell season' and is to be released on april 21st in ireland and later on in the summer on overcoat in america. i believe that indies records in the czech republic will be releasing the cd too, sooner rather than later, but if you want to order online, you can always do so at www.roadrecs.com, wherever you are in the world. joining them on this project were bertrand galen on cello and marja tuhkanen on fiddle. recorded and mixed over 6 days in a prague studio in early december, the record includes some songs that you may have heard at either a frames or a glen solo gig (falling slowly, leave, in the arms of this low, sleeping) and some songs that you will probably never have heard at all. marketa takes the lead vocal on a track too 'alone apart' and she also penned the title tune - a beautiful, swirling instrumental. some of these songs are also featured in the film that glen and marketa have just finished shooting called 'once' (thats the one that john carney, ex frames bass player turned director, shot in dublin about a busker played by glen) - and some songs are also featured in a czech film called 'beauty in trouble' (not featuring glen as an actor - just the music!) that film was directed by acclaimed czech director, jan hrebejk, and there is more stuff about that film here at this link....

glen and marketa are playing a one off gig in new york on the 19th march at pianos while they are in town mastering the swell season. im sorry to say, but its sold out already and i can confirm that this will now be the ONLY show that they will be doing whilst in nyc for those that have been asking.

barry mcormack and josh ritter both have albums out this week - both fantastic and well worth checking out.

the dream awake vid was added to mtv2s subterranean show recently.

and last but not least, the frames have recorded an irish language version of suffer in silence, Pian agus Ciúnas (pronounced Peean oguss Kewness), for inclusion on the Ceol 06 album. its just out this week and its part of the celebrations of Seachtain Na Gaeilge (Irish language Week).

right thats it. more too follow im sure soon enough. theres potentially a lot going on this year...still working on the dvd from the point for those that are asking. just waiting for rob to have the time to mix the audio (he's obviously a bit tied up in the studio right now). zoran orlic, our photographer friend from chicago, is getting together a photo book too for publication later in the year...will let you know the scores on that when i have things firm. anyways - better go...things to do....people to see....dogs to walk.....children to pick up......take care ya hear..... cx
